STORYLINE

The Football Monologues tells the stories of seven different people living in and around the beautiful game. Each of our subjects talks intimately, unveiling their innermost hopes and fears. One by one they touch on themes central to us all: the fragility of our mental selves, the failings of our bodies, the complexities of our relationships and ambitions and our need to connect.

CHARACTERS:

FRANK is Afro-Caribbean and in his late 50’s. Currently working as a scout and as a cabbie, he’s done almost everything in the game, apart from being a referee. He’s thoughtful, measured, old school in his approach to football and life and bemoans many modern day values.

LUCY is an enthusiastic, positive, 21-year-old, full of life and ready for fun and adventure. She’s easy going, affable but lazy. She loves playing football at university but enjoys the social side of the game even more.

COLIN is an experienced, stickler for rules and regulations, referee, in his 50’s. Woe betide anyone who steps out of line in the kingdom of Colin. Married to Elaine, who’s a very good cook, he’s fair minded, reasonable and oozes suburbia.

AMELIA is a confident, positive, sociable, energetic, business woman, in her early 50’s, with three teenage/university age children. She is very middle class, full of life, game for most things and thanks to her boyf’ has become passionate about football.

GORDON is in his 60’s and lives for managing his Under 13 team. Now that his wife has died he’d be in despair without it. Attempting to follow in the footsteps of legends such as Brian Clough, he takes his responsibilities as seriously as any top manager and is totally focused, with tunnel vision, on winning the cup.

KIMBERLY is a straight talking, no nonsense, powerful, tough as nails, working class, business woman, in her 50’s. Unshakable, unshockable, there’s no messing with her. She has a sassy quality and although not conventionally attractive she scrubs up well.

MARK is a professional player, in his late 20’s, who should be in his prime. He’s struggling however, mentally, to cope with the pressure and cut throat nature of life in football. Married with young children, he’s riddled with self doubt and anxiety, which is taking its toll on all aspects of his life.
